What would the punishment be for stealing?… Since the crime didn't occur in our jurisdiction, what would protocol dictate.

What is the punishment for threatening the life of a constable?
Do we have jail cells to work with, or offices or anything?

So you caught a criminal:

  1. Detain Criminal.
    1. Constables have the right to temporarily seize property (eg. attics, cages, rope, ect.) to aid in this detention if need be.
  2. Do 'footwork.'
    1. For petty crime: Resolve dipute and adjudicate recompense.
    2. For theft: Recover and return stolen property.
    3. For violent crime, or crimes against the state: Take witnesses statements and gather evidence.
  3. Determine whether criminal deserves further recourse.
    1. If yes: Send to Guyns for trial with statements from witnesses and constables.
    2. If no: Discarge criminal back into the community.

At the end of every week a 'runner' from Guyns arrives in every community to collect any complaints, information, or criminals detained. All crimes require at least a written statement from the constables even if criminals are undetained or untried.

Note that detention is left up to the constables based on personal style and the severity of the crime. It can range from placing the criminal in stocks in the city square to simply admonishing the criminal to be home by sundown.

Nick and I had a chat via the ol' IMGM about the legality of things and the role of the constable as related to threats… I thought I'd post it here without his permission because I think I explained it a little better there.

18:29] nicklwray: yeah, i saw the post from trav regarding that. IS threatening a constable a crime?
[18:29] angstmachine: [DELETED DUE TO IT BEING OFF TOPIC]
[18:30] angstmachine: not specifically, but it could be construed as a crime against the state…
[18:31] nicklwray: WHA?!
[18:31] nicklwray: how d'ya figure?
[18:31] angstmachine: it's medieval style society… laws [aren't like] that
[18:32] nicklwray: no, i mean how d'ya figure it could be construed as a crime against the state. i get why it wouldn't specifically be a crime to just threaten me.
[18:32] angstmachine: stealing is bad, killing is bad, destruction of property is bad… might is right sometimes though, and nobody was hurt…
[18:32] nicklwray: aren't we just employed by the local PD?
[18:33] angstmachine: your effectively deputized against the sheriff…
[18:33] angstmachine: [deputized] _by_ the [sheriff]
[18:34] angstmachine: not to say that if you had statements and witnesses that you couldn't have them tried…
[18:34] angstmachine: just there is no [specific] law against threats of violence that aren't specifically coercive…
[18:35] angstmachine: [her story was that] she was trying to ensure that there [wasn't a] fight by threatening you..
[18:35] nicklwray: gotchya
[18:35] angstmachine: like if she had [threatened] you to [coerce you into] steal[ing] something, or [to] go kill some people…
[18:36] angstmachine: cool
[18:37] angstmachine: ya'll are the law though… you technically have the right to detain anyone you want and accuse anyone you want of anything…
[18:37] angstmachine: you can beand degree of good or bad cops as you see fit, and probably get away with it…
[18:38] angstmachine: beand=be any
[18:38] angstmachine: your just [supposed] to also have a moral compass
