NIck's Bachelor party is this sunday. It is technically over at 10ish so we could play afterwards, but i hope to be completely drunk, so i'd prefer if we could play earlier this week. Steve would be free for a late night game on saturday starting around 11 or 12. is that cool with everyone else? if not when? i really want to play this week as i would hate for us to lose the momentum so soon after starting.

So, everyone's sudden disappearance makes it clear that something has changed in our feelings about what is happening in this game. i have tried to be a little more hands off in this scene and leave it to everyone to discuss IC what is going on, and advance the plot, but little has happened for nearly 2 weeks now,

are we bored with the scene? the game in general? where this plot is going?

please tell me, and don't pull any punches, how you are feeling about this thing we are doing? If you don't have the time or the inclination to play then please say so, and i can begin recruiting for a replacement. If the plot, or the game is becoming boring we can try something new.

maybe this could be the alpha version of this idea, and we start over with the beta, now that we all have a better idea how we want this thing to work. just lemme know what you are thinking.

-r

While i love the beautiful prose that the two of you have been writing it is time to tame the beast that is your verbosity in this conversation. Please edit your poses down to the essentials. This is effectively a very minor scene in a novel so please keep that in mind as you make cuts.

If anyone noticed anything else I will PM with more Information.

To the right you will see the floor plan of The Red Door.

The bar itself is composed of pine clap board. The hearth is almost too big and bears all the earmarks of a forge, but with the accoutrements removed. The bar itself looks like a huge workbench that still bears scorch marks beneath the highly polished surface. It is plainly obvious that is establishment was once a part of the blacksmith's next door.

Welcome to the Second Scene-ual Experience Awards. I'm your host, the GM. It's always an honor to host these prestigeous awards. Alot of this game is about me. I roll the dice, I start the scenes. I'm very sexy and capable. but tonight — Tonight! Tonight, whoa! It's all about you. Everyone who played in this scene gets 25 experience points.

Non-Violence Award

Sometimes it's just easier to kill a motherfucker. It's a problem we face in our day to day lives, and that we no doubt struggle with. Luckily it's easier to take the high road in Dungeons & Dragons. For not rising to the bait all the players receive 150 experience

Best Role-Player Award

Tonight we open up the hallowed halls of role-playing and induct a man who needs no introduction. Travis wins. He gets 100 experience points for Loraethal.

RSS Usage Award

As two of you know I made a post a couple weeks ago that was entitled 'Another Boring Detail.' It was posted in the news section wich seems not to draw a great deal of readers, and was designed to not grab your attention at all. Had you read it, however you would have recived 25 experience like Nick and Travis did.

Thank you all for coming and allowing me to host this spectacular affair. Please feel free to post your acceptance speeches below.

After the meeting with Zelania the party makes it's way over to the Red Door. It is nearly empty, and empties further when the constables enter. The few patrons who remain are all out-of-towners and carelittle to converse so instead the constables try and enjoy each others company for the intervening time

If your character is doing something different please PM me, or note it below. I will post a simple introduction to scene 3 tomorrow around noon, with something resembling the above text, but you will all have untill monday at noon to inform me otherwise. You have about 2 and a half hours to play with before the Eighth Bell.

I would like for those of you who will be playing Eberon to look at the 11 archetypes that are given in the Player's Guide to Eberron. these are guidelines for role-playing, and include a loose background. I would like each of you to choose one of these before we actually generate the numbers.

Again, for those of you who will find this idea abhorrent, these are loose descriptions, your motivations and personalty are still yours to craft, but the broad archetypes will help you narrow that personality down to something much more devoloped and unique. They are meant to be a simple framework within which you can let you creativity run wild.

These are reproduced here without permission. They are offered free and will, in no way, create any profit for this site, it's creators, members, or hosts. it will be deleted in a few days after it is no longer useful to our gaming group. Please don't sue me, and if you do, i live in poverty, so good luck.

Unless there are any objections i believe we can go ahead and start wrapping this thing up. I would like to be done by Monday at 12:00am, and then we can spend the next week doing any final editing that may be needed.

By Friday of the coming week I would like to host the Second Scene-ual Experience Awards. If you would all be so kind as to PM me your votes for who should be awarded the Excellence in Role-Playing Award for this scene, it would be greatly appreciated. You can, of course, vote for yourself, and feel free to include any kudos along with your message and they may be included in the awards ceremony. Please include 'My Vote' or something in the subject line.

Any questions, concerns, or comments about wrapping up the scene should be posted here.

Features city! So maybe I'm just a little too obsessed with web 2.0 applications in general, but i have added a series of features to the wiki that will hopefully speed the process of inter-personal relations, and there-by speed the game.

Chat

I have added a chat page to the wiki, here. It is intended for OOC discussion only, and anything related to character actions OOC, or IC must still be posed or posted as the chat software does not have a log feature. Buttons on the sidebar and the current scene page tell you instantly if anyone is in the chatroom. If your on the page feel free to open up a new tab in your browser for the chat window and let your fellow players know your online.

IMGM & meebo

In the side bar i have added an IM window. It displays my online status so that you know if i am available to receive messages, but my IM client logs offline messages, so feel free to drop me a line via IMGM anytime. Discussions via this system can be IC or OOC, and do not need to be otherwise posed or posted, unless otherwise noted by me. This account links to my meebo account which uses the Jabber open-source IM software, so IMGM can be added to your normal IM client if it uses jabber (eg. Gaim, Meebo, or Google Talk). If you need help adding IMGM as a friend, or if you have a meebo account and would like your own embedded IM window, please contact me.

Skype

At the bottom of the [chat | chat] page I have added a Skype status button. If you have Skype, clicking it will place a call to my account and we can talk in real time. Linux users will have to manually enter me into their Skype buddy list, however, as the software is still in beta (my username is rob.keys). If you have Skype and would like your own status button please contact me.

Welcome to the Scene 1 Experience Awards:

We're here to recognize the outstanding players who took part in Scene 1 of the game. everyone who plays wins, though, as all of the participants in scene one will take home 50 Experience for just showing up.

Non-Violence

As heroes, our characters have a responsibility to act like heroes as well. As we all know, violence is rarely the best possible solution to a problem, and accordingly the GM likes to reward those who choose the path that leads to peaceful resolution to in-game conflict. The player(s) who exemplifies this philosophy in this scene will gain an Ad Hoc experience award of 100 Points. and the winner is…

Willow (Applause)

Good Role-Play Award

This game we play is best when it becomes an escape from our day-to-day lives. We take up the roles of people who are very different from ourselves, in a world that is very different from our own so that we might learn more about each other, and maybe, just maybe, a little bit about ourselves. It is for this very reason that the player who is the best at taking on the role of their characters should be rewarded as they make it easier for us all to be better role players by example. The winner of this award will earn 100 Ad Hoc experience as a token of our collective appreciation of the fine job they have done playing their characters. And the winner is…

Grakul and Yuri (who will split the 100 XP award)

Good Attendance Award

Somebody once said that some percentage of life (maybe 90%?) is just showing up, or something. The same holds true for Play-by-Wiki RPG's. The Winner(s) of this award will receive 100 Ad Hoc Experience Points for the commitment they have made to this game. And the winner is…

Grakul and Yuri (who each get the 100 XP award)

Thank you all for coming to the Scene 1 Experience Awards. It's been a pleasure being your host, and i'll see you all again after Scene 2. Please feel free to post your acceptance speeches below.

If you want a specific image for your character, either one you create, or one you find on the web, please send me the image, or post it in this forum. images should be a minimum of 100x100 pixels and if it is a large image please note how you would like me to crop the image. i will post the result in this forum so everyone can see it.

Google image search, or course, is usually a safe bet for finding fantasy art, but i also like conceptart.org. it's kind of a bear to navigate and find something good, but it's usually an incredibly high quality.

Timekeeping and The Bells.

Information and discussion about how time is reckoned on Terus.

 <wikidot:authorName>Angstmachine</wikidot:authorName> <wikidot:authorUserId>14171</wikidot:authorUserId>

I note the following IC information below to clear up how time is measured on Terus due, in part, to the confusion created by my poses using terms that only holdmeaning to me (as this setting is all in my head), and in part because it does slightly affect the game mechanics in ways that you should be aware of. Note that the following in no way affects the system of rounds and turns and the times that they represent in game.

Time on Terus

The day on Terus is around twenty-five and a half hours long in our reckoning, and is reckoned on Terus in Canticles. A Canticle in our reckoning is about three hours and twenty minutes, and can be further broken into eight twenty-four minute blocks called Cantos. Finally Cantos are further broken into eight three minute blocks that are called Psalms. See table below for clarification and more information.

Time as Reckoned on Terus

Terunian Increments

Familiar Time Measurement

One Year

8 Months and 2 weeks of feast

272 days

One Month

4 Weeks

32 days

One Week

8 Days

8 Days

One Day

8 Canticles

25.6 Hours

One Canticle

8 Cantos

3 Hours 20 Minutes

One Canto

8 Psalms

24 Minutes

One Psalm

N/A

3 Minutes

The reckoning of time is based on the approximate time it takes to read aloud a section of The Canticles, the Book that describes the creation of Terus by the eight children of The Lord. Due to this, it falls apon the monks of the various orders to keep track of time in most communities. At dawn, as soon as the Solus can be seen over the horizon in every monastery on Terus, A monk rings the bell of his chapel, this is the First Bell. From this point the times may vary, however as different orders have different rules governing the ringing of The Bells. Some very traditional orders will have a monk read the Canticles aloud in the bell tower over the city or town, ringing the bell only after a Canticle is done, before moving on to the next. Other more progressive orders assist the monks in keeping time by using devices such as hourglasses, candles with specific burn times, waterclocks, and even the occasional rare and expensive mechanical clock, so that the monk can meter the pace of his or her reading to be able to finish a Canticle in the "traditional' sixty-four Psalm time frame. Ultimately, by the end of the day, as the last monk of the night begins to read the Cantos of Orci aloud, the bell has been rung eight times. In this way anyone near a chapel or church, day or night, can know the exact time by listening closely to the monks in the tower as they drone the sacred words of The Canticles.

This system has been in place since time immemorial, and has been honed into a science, so the method of keeping time is surprisingly accurate. Monks who perform this ancient practice are highly trained in how to read each Canticle in the precise rhythm that is required so that ultimately, being so familiar with the text itself, the words become as numbers, and the act more of counting seconds than of reading a narrative. That is not to say that the gravity of the holy words are lost on the monks either for often, when not officially reading a Canticle they are surely listening and contemplating in their cells below.

The ultimate check for the validity of the time as determined by the reading of The Canticles is the sunrise, however. If were to ever happen that the sun should rise before a monk finishes reading the Cantos of Orci then she would stop, ring the bell, and begin Dwarev's Canticle (although it has never been documented as having ever occured). This does make this system of reckoning time a mutable one, for as the dawn slides back and forth through the seasons so do the words of the monks appear at different times of the day so that in the winter the sun sets for Huma's Cantos, while the summer sees the sun set for Hobi's. Also, it should be noted that as the sun rises the Canticles read in the east start earlier, and so the reckoning of the day begins earlier.

OOC Note

The difference in how time is understood on Terus effects spell durations as well as well as any other affects that have a time element (such as casting times). If the description says 1 minute then read 1 Psalm, or one hour becomes 1 Canticle.

As some of you may or may not know this game is set in an original setting. It is presently called 'Terus' after the name of the world itself, and is a setting originally meant to contain elements of steam-punk with low-magic fantasy. At the present, in this game, however the 'industrial revolution' has yet to take place. Due to the fact that this event is a big deal, and alters forever the face of the world, the exact date of this game and of the events that set off the revolution are currently restricted OOC information, however anything that happened before that time is fair game IC.

That being said, information about the setting, is available at http://terus.pbwiki.com. You will note that this is also written on a wiki engine. This means that you can take an active role in crafting the history, which is both rich and storied, of this very ancient world. If you would be interested in becoming a contributor to this site and setting please PM or e-mail me and i will send you the password to the site.

More information about the changes going on over at that wiki will be noted here, along with discussions about the content therein.

Basically as you read through the scene imagine that it is the first chapter of a fantasy novel. What is good and should stay, and what is lame and should go? here's alot of information to catch up on, i know, but everyone else has been working hard to put this together, so it's the least you can do. Just keep in mind that the events have happened, and will not change, but the way we describe them can change completely.

if you want to make any huge changes to the flow of the page please suggest them here as i will be doing my final edit of the scene next week as the players start scene 2.

For those of you who have yet to pose, the scene is starting to get good. I would hate for you to be intimidated by the sheer volume of words that have already started filling up the wiki page, and for you to think it's too late to contribute to this scene. i beg you to jump in there, describe what your character has been doing since entering the bar, and what they are doing now. Feel free to go back and pose your reactions to the events thus far, and i can assure you that the others will go back and insert reactions to you. The scene as it stands now id fluid and dynamic, and it isn't done untill the next one starts.

If you don't know where to begin i'd be happy get you started, please feel free to PM me with what your character has been doing. I'll enter a loose description of your actions, and you can then just go in and elaborate. Or you could be late getting back from the Inn, or the Stables and just walk in on this scene.

Please take some time to pose your players, though, as this is a crucial part of the story as you now have a chance to get into character and establish the party dynamic. If your unable to find the time, at least PM me and let me know your even still here, arrangements can be made to work you into the story, or at the very least get you started on the next scene.

My proposal:

12 hour time limit on dice rolls: if a roll is required of your character and you do not respond either IC, OOC, or via PM to me i will generate numbers for you and pose, post, or PM the result. Poses made by me for PC's will be underlined and in no way permanent. re-poses are welcome, as this is simply a way to keep the game moving, however all dice rolls are final.

18 hour time limit on required pose: If a PC or an NPC addresses or interacts with your character directly and a response is expected, and you do not respond either IC, OOC, or via PM to me i will pose for you. Poses made by me for PC's will be underlined and in no way permanent. re-poses are welcome, as this is simply a way to keep the game moving.

24 hour time limit on combat actions: If it is your turn in combat and you do not complete that turn within 24 hours by responding either IC, OOC, or via PM you either forfeit any experience bonus you may have been awarded thus far in the scene, or you will take a hit of -5% experience to this scene, or the next scene where experience is awarded. If you do not respond within 48 hours you forfeit your turn.

Players who consistently reply in under half of the required time will be rewarded with ad-hoc experience awards, or, in the case of combat, a 5% bonus to the experience awarded at the end of the scene: 6 hours for a 12 hour time limit, 9 hours for an 18 hour time limit, and 12 hours for a 24 hour time limit.

Absences of 5 days (120 hours): If a Player does not make their presence known, either IC, OOC, or via PM to me, for 5 consecutive days they will be assumed to no longer be in the current scene. They will still receive any experience points they earned for the parts of the scene they were present for.

These are merely suggestions, and by no means the official policy at this point. i want everyone's feedback on this idea (preferably within the next 48 hours). I don't want this to not be fun because it is a chore, but i also want to keep it interesting, and make it possible for everyone to log in and find something to do if they have set aside the time to log on and play the game.

in the meantime, however the reward system will be in place. so frequent posers should look forward to experience awards for all the good role playing they have been, and, hopefully, will continue to do on here.

This board will be an in depth description of the tavern and it's patrons. What's really exciting about gaming in this format is the amount of detail that can be used, and rather than it detracting from the experience it enhances it. Over the next few days i will describe the 30 odd patrons drinking and carousing in the tavern by table. To the right you can see the floor plan of the tavern with the table numbers to use a visual point of reference.

To start with i will describe the Barkeeper and the wait staff:

BARKEEPER: Middle aged Male Half-Orc who has Thick Auburn Hair, pink eyes, a stocky frame with Light, greyish skin, a Large scar on left arm and who Has a look of friendliness.

WAITRESS #1 (the one who greeted you): Young Female Human who has Thick Black Hair, Hazel eyes, a Small, curvy frame with Very pale skin, a Look of Nervousness and who Appears to be angry. She is avoiding your table like the plague.

WAITRESS #2: Youthful looking Female Human who has Thick Black Hair, Brown eyes, a Reubenesque frame with Olive skin, and who Appears to be friendly.

WAITRESS #3: Teenage Female Human who has Long Dark Hair, Brown eyes, a Lithe frame with Pale skin, Some freckles on face and who Seems to be talkative.

BUS BOY: Teenage Male Human who has Short Blonde Hair, Blue Eyes, a Hunched twisted body with Leathery Tannned skin, and who Seems busy.

Here's how i imagine this scene working:

Role playing free for all!

By that i mean that it will be pretty hard to move this tavern scene so far ahead that someone get's left behind by not being able to pose as much as anyone else. Also we can have a few conversations going at once at different points in game time, and just edit them together when we are done with this scene.

What I'm utimately saying is: Feel free to pose away! Experiment. This is where I hope we develop your characters personalities a bit. If you don't like how something is going, then put up a lined divider by typing ----- on a new line and start a new pose a little later in game time. You, or another player can always come back to it later and we can sew this scene together from the best parts.

I imagine this scene will last untill this time next week, and then we'll edit it down to the meat.

Okay, re-pose is done. I cut everything down a bit, eliminated references that were related to the party being larger than four, and added the tavern intro so that we can get down to some RP that will actually be consequential now that we are down to the 4 who will actually be playing the first part of this game.

I also adjusted some of the player poses (cut some stuff and added some stuff), so if you are unhappy with the changes i made feel free to edit, or bitch at me here and i'll change it.

Go nuts!
